Structural Integration “or Rolfing” is a system used to align and balance the physical body within its gravitational field, by freeing and reorganizing the myofascia (connective tissue) that surrounds the muscles. SI primarily involves hands on manual therapy that is based on a formula of ten sessions (The Ten Series), strategically sequenced to structurally re-align and integrate the human body. Related movements are also addressed. Through the systematic organization of the body’s fascial connective tissues, SI addresses many underlying causes of physical and emotional challenges.
When fascial adhesions release the body is free to move, however, habitual patterns may persist. Movement education towards the end of each session empowers clients to learn new and lasting ways of being in their bodies.
Structural Integration has the potential to dramatically alter your structure and posture and can resolve discomfort, release tension and alleviate pain. It can also restore and enhance flexibility, revitalize energy and have you feeling more comfortable in your body.
Structural Integration facilitates more efficient use of muscles, allowing your body to conserve energy, and create more refined patterns of movement with less effort. This reduces chronic stress and enhances neurological functioning.
Dr. Ida P. Rolf developed the process of Structural Integration as a holistic system combining soft tissue manipulation and movement education to restore the body to it’s natural state of alignment and balance - by lengthening, restoring, and reorganizing the fascia, the connective tissue matrix of the body.
Dr. Ida P. Rolf was a biochemist at Columbia University in the early 1940's. With a profound understanding of physics, she focused on the role and function of fascial tissues surrounding organs, muscles, bones, joints and its effects on body shape and support.
She worked for 12 years at The Rockefeller Institute in the Department of Chemotherapy and later in Organic Chemistry. She also studied atomic physics at the Swiss Technical Institute in Zurich. Dr. Rolf continued to search passionately for answers to family health problems. This led her to study many systems including Osteopathy, Chiropractic, and Yoga. She was ahead of her time! Throughout her explorations, Dr. Rolf was grounded in the scientific point of view, and also acknowledged the value of solutions arrived at intuitively.
